New Police Technology

Policing the Risk Society by Richard V. Ericson,

Policing the Risk Society by Richard V. Ericson,
'the most significant theoretical work on the police since Bittner's The Functions of the Police (1970).' -- Jerome H. Skolnick, Visiting Distinguished Professor, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, The City University of New York 'extends the "risk theory" literature into new and important areas, while offering a radical reconception of police work and organisation.' -- David Garland, Centre for Law and Society University of Edinburgh The Information Age Has Left Few of us Untouched; individuals and institutions have undergone radical transformations in the race to get the most out of new technologies. The police are no exception. Policing the Risk Society introduces us to a shocking new vision of police work where information gathered by the police with surveillance and data collection technologies is brokered to other institutions. Richard Ericson and Kevin Haggerty contend that the police have become information brokers to institutions such as insurance companies and health and fare organizations that operate based on a knowledge of risk. In turn, these institutions influence the ways that police officers think and act. A critical review of existing research reveals the need to study police interaction with institutions as well as individuals. These institutions are part of an emerging 'risk society' where knowledge of risk is used to control danger. The authors examine different aspects of police involvement: the use of surveillance technologies, and the collection of data on securities, careers, and different social, ethnic, age, and gender groups. They conclude by looking at how police organizations have been forced to bureaucratize and to perpetually develop newcommunications rules, formats and technologies to meet external demands for knowledge of risk. Ericson and Haggerty revolutionize the study of policing and are the first to provide concrete evidence of the central tenets of risk society theory.

Policing and Training Issues by Michael J. Palmiotto,
Policing and Training Issues by Michael J. Palmiotto,
On almost a daily basis, somewhere in the United States, a police officer commits an act that often leads to a question of his or her training. After selection, perhaps the most crucial aspect of police officer development is the training. Even the U.S. Supreme Court has weighed in on thin subject by holding that a police agency and its governing body could be sued for a failure to adequately train, or for failing to provide training, to police officers. Considering the importance of this topic, one would think that there would be numerous books on the subject. Yet to date, there are a very limited number. "Policing and Training Issues" is among the first edited works available offering an important array of training topics. In "Policing and Training Issues," Dr. Michael Palmiotto and his co-authors, have created a textbook that examines some of today's most important training subjects. It begins with an overview of police training throughout police history and includes subjects on academy management, executive training, police corps, learning theories, and developing skills, as well as other specialty subjects such as: multicultural training; field training officers; criminal investigations; and community policing. The text concludes with a chapter that integrates all topics covered as well as a look at the future of police training. This new textbook represents an in-depth examination of policing and various related training issues through the perspectives of respected academics and practitioners. This textbook will help broaden the reader's understanding of the relationship between the police and their training.

New Jersey State Police - The New Jersey State Police is the state police force for the state of New Jersey. As with the New York State Police, the primary reason for the creation of the New Jersey State Police was for the protection of rural areas that had never had law enforcement, beyond a local sheriff, who was often not able to provide suitable police services.

New South Wales Police - The New South Wales Police (also NSW Police or NSWPOL) is the primary law enforcement agency in the State of New South Wales, Australia. It is an agency of the Government of New South Wales within the New South Wales Ministry for Police.

New York City Police Department - The New York City Police Department (NYPD), the largest police department in the United States, has primary responsibility for law enforcement and investigation within the five boroughs of New York City. It is considered to be the first "modern" style police department in the United States; when it was created in the 19th century, it was modeled after London's Metropolitan Police.

New York State Police - The New York State Police is the state police force for the state of New York. It was established on April 11, 1917 by the State Legislature in response to the 1913 murder of construction foreman Sam Howell in Westchester County, which at that time did not have a local police department.
